Loan Academic Dress
I request the loan of the following academic dress:

A limited number of reserved car parking spaces will be available for staff use at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. The granting of a reserved park does not guarantee the permit holder that a space will be available on the day.
Permits will be distributed during the week leading up to the ceremony.

Loan Academic Dress

Staff, who are graduates of JCU may request the loan of a JCU gown to wear at a ceremony (PhD, Masters, Bachelor). Graduates from other institutions may borrow a black gown and mortar board.

If you wish the loan of a gown please complete the 'LOAN -Academic Dress' section on the registration/response form. A limited number of PhD gowns are available, first preference for the loan of these gowns is given to graduating students.

Loan PhD gowns will be available for collection form the Magnetic Room (for Townsville ceremonies) and the Sheridan Street Foyer (for the Cairns ceremony) up to an hour prior to the commencement of the ceremony. Please ensure that staff in attendance records the return of gowns after the ceremony.

Bachelor, Masters and Black gowns are to be collected from:

  • Townsville: The JCU Bookshop, the Wednesday and Thrusday of the week of the ceremony and also from the Palm Room at the Townsville Convention Centre prior to each ceremony.
  • Cairns: The Cairns JCU Bookshop, the Thursday and Friday of the week of the ceremony.

The terms for the loan gowns from the JCU Bookshops are governed by the Bookshop management.

Cultural Sash Presentation Ceremonies

Indigenous students graduating at a ceremony wil be presented with a JCU Cultural Sash at an informal presentation Ceremony thirty five minutes prior to the commencement of each ceremony. Staff are invited to attend these ceremonies which will be held in the Magnetic Room Townsville and the Sheridan Street foyer Cairns. Please wear your academic dress to these presentations.

Important Information

  • Please be robed no later than thirty (30) minutes prior to the commencement of each ceremony.
  • Academic Procession participants will be requested to commence assembling approximately twenty (20) minutes prior to the commencement of the ceremony.
  • Each ceremony will commence promptly at the scheduled times.


Order of Procession

The procession enters the auditorium in the following order:

  • Ceremony Marshal
  • Academic Staff
  • JCU Council Members
  • Invited Dignitaries
  • Members of the Official Party


National Anthem

Protocol requires that mortar boards/bonnets be removed during the playing of the National Anthem.


At the conclusion of each ceremony, the Academic Procession led by the Marshall will leave the auditorium in the reverse order to that which entered.

A short informal reception for members of the Academic Procession, VIP guests. PhD graduates and their families will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Sheridan Street Foyer (Cairns) and the Magnetic Room (Townsville).

Staff are encouraged to also join the graduates and their guests to light refreshments served in the venue forecourt.
